Who is she?
Grace Park is the founder of DocDoc, Asia’s largest digital healthcare network that allows patients to find doctors or dentists, assess their credentials and achievements, and book an appointment online, at any time of the day. This empowers patients to find the right doctor who suits their needs without having to experience frustrations or inconveniences associated with finding a doctor conventionally.
With over 20 years of professional experience, 15 of which have been spent leading pharmaceutical, and digital health companies, she started her career as a Military Intelligence Officer after graduating with Honours from the US Military Academy. She completed her military service at the Pentagon with the rank of Captain.
A well-rounded individual, Grace also has dual degrees from Harvard Business School and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and arrived in Singapore on a Fulbright Fellowship.
How DocDoc started
When Park and her husband received the news from the head liver surgeon that their 3-month old daughter had to undergo surgery immediately as her liver was failing, they were filled with so many questions and doubts surrounding the doctor’s experience, his outcomes, and costs involved. But when the doctor did not provide specific answers to the questions, Park’s search for the right doctor began. She eventually managed to find an established liver surgeon who was one of the pioneers of live transplant procedures and had plenty of experience – all at a lower cost.
To prevent other patients from feeling lost at a vulnerable period in their lives, Park founded DocDoc to empower patients and help them in their search for the right doctor by providing meaningful data points.
Challenges she faced
Park had to overcome many obstacles before she could succeed. But what makes her different is that she viewed these challenges as opportunities. Some of the main challenges that she encountered include:
1. creating an accessible platform, to expand throughout the region while having custom features to ensure relevancy in local markets,
2. promoting a company culture that embraces her values, and
3. keeping abreast with rapid developments to digital innovation.
As a female entrepreneur, Park believes healthcare is an attractive sector for women. Since many women entrepreneurs are also mothers themselves, women add a more empathetic touch to the sector, which allows them to stand out and pave their way to success.
